Betty Joanne Black-Gossage
2/25/1946 - 2/16/2021
Our beloved and beautiful Betty Joanne Black-Gossage, daughter of Howard and Alice Black, is now among the angels after she fought so hard with aggressive cancer.
This tough lady smiled and consoled her doctors and loved ones throughout, as we all tried to make her last days on this Earth as comfortable and loving as possible. I think we did. She felt and knew how many others were trying to reach her, sending love from afar, or just hadn't arrived yet. Her best friends from 3rd grade were minutes away with homemade soup when they got the text. She loved you all. Her last poem was appropriately titled, Covid Sucks, it kept us all from her this last precious year.
Massillon will never be the same without Betty aka Mother Goose, Grandma Goose, Grandma Mimi, Grandma Betty, Betty Boop, Mom, Sister, My Other Mother, Babysitter, and friend to so, so many. We can't wait to hear how many of you had received a handwritten, personal poem from her over the years. She always highlighted what she liked about you, didn't she? She knew everyone's birthday and I'm sure many of you received a card each year with her beautiful handwriting and you felt her love. We know we did.
The condolences have poured in as news of Betty spread across town. The "sweetest woman we've ever met" "I just loved her" "She was like a mother/sister to me" were the most common messages we have received. Her girls, Sue, Lisa, and Amy agreed that if we could be a quarter of the gracious, selfless, thoughtful, and kind woman she was, we would be incredibly lucky. We told her we'd be OK because she raised us.
Betty was an adored mother of four, mother-in-law to three, grandmother to thirteen, great-grandmother of six, sister to four siblings, aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, a second mom to most of our friends, and a friend to so many.
Rest in peace, beautiful sweet angel. Until we all meet again. We love you, we love you, we love you. Your family and friends. xoxo
Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, February 22, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Raymond Paul officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 am on Monday prior to the service at the church.

We lost our beautiful, beloved Mother today. We are all so heartbroken we didn't have more time with her. She's home now and she's no longer in pain.
Lisa has been getting weird little signs from Danny all week. Reassuring me he's got her. The minute she took her last breath, we were holding her hands and telling her we loved her. I looked out the window and a black bird flew over the house. We are in the middle of the worst storm of the century and a black bird flew by. Grandpa Black's nickname was Blackie. A few minutes later, two black birds flew over the house. The nurse that came to help us was named Tammy (Kevin's deceased sisters name). I said, "Of course it is." She happened to mention her boyfriends name was Danny. I said, "Of course it is."
Rest in peace, you beautiful sweet angel. Until we all meet again. We love you, Mom. We love you, we love you, we love you. xoxo

Mom spent her day with her family, surrounded with love, remembering all of the good days.
She was talking about Barb's soup. She was hoping you made chicken noodle, Barb. She asked if we remembered the Kimmensville memories. Every last one of them, Mom. You made it so special.
We told her we loved her. She said, I love you, too. Sleep tight.

Mom had her favorite Valentine's treats today. A Reese Peanut butter heart, vanilla cherry Coke and hugs from her family. She also had a nice visit with Karlene who grew up next door to us and calls Mom, My Other Mother. And, she's not the only one that does. That's why they call her Mother Goose.
Ryan and Cam stopped by again for more grandma love. So grateful to see Ryan and Chelc, they were supposed to be at a wedding with Ryan as the best man for his best friend. But, nothing is more important than his grandma, so he stayed back to be with her.
Mom is also looking forward to her visit with her BFFs from second grade this week, Barb (aka B-Butt) and Pat. Mom was in second grade when they met, they were in first grade and were forever bonded as the three musketeers. If it wasn't for this darn weather and Covid scares, they'd be hugging and reminiscing already. And Barb is bringing her amazing soup that Mom and Grandma always thought she should sell. Can't wait to taste it.
She made it through Valentine's Day. It must have been the outpouring of love. As Amy said, she's the Grandma of Love.

Mom started her day with the breakfast she asked for, fried mush from Top of the Viaduct! Thank goodness it was their Special today. She and Grandma just love that stuff. It's actually pretty good, now that I've tried it. But gotta have butter and warm syrup on top.
Amy and the kids came over to visit. Her eyes just lit up and her smile was as big as her face when she saw Landen, Braxton, Carson, and Ayla. Then, Ryan, Chelc, Cam, and Tanner showed up. Dan was already there, along with her daughters, sisters and Kevin. She was so happy she was surrounded in so much love. Ayla girl, who is only two, just snuggled and loved her. Those two are peas in a pod. Judi believes she has mom's disposition and personality. Let's hope so.
Brax had mentioned he wanted to be a church camp counselor when he's in 7th grade, so I told Mom that. When this kind boy brought his grandma a drink, she told him she thought he would be so good at that!
Sleep tight, sweet mama.

Mom was just glowing today after her lovely visit with Amy this morning. They prayed, watched crazy videos her kids make and post on YouTube, and just talked and laughed.
Nancy, Judi and Lisa showed up next and planned our evening with her! Kraus' Pizza, of course, when the three of us are in town and Mom hasn't been out of The Inn for almost a year. The hard part is agreeing on toppings. :-) We also prayed with her and held her hand until they brought her lunch.
What a big difference from yesterday when she wasn't hungry and only ate a bit of yogurt and applesauce. Today, she sat up (with our help) and ate a chicken and green bean lunch! It was a big plate and she ate most of it. Whew! She needs to get her strength back.
We scheduled the break-out for 4PM and were so excited to get back to the hospital. Mom looked so cute in her bright shirt and yoga pants after the drab hospital gown all week. We thanked our Aultman Angels and took off for Massillon!
After a successful transport to Sue's, we all had our pizza (Thank you, Judi!) and got her settled in her new room. Whew! She was smiling most of the day. It filled our hearts. We did the right thing. I told her that her new medicine was the medicine of Love! And, so far it's working better than the chemo did. Now, we can start the stream of visitors to give her even more.

Mom's sisters, Nancy and Judi, arrived today from sunny Florida. She could not believe they braved this weather to come see her. Of course they did. Judi helped her with her lunch, she's still sore and tired from the stroke.
Mom is spending her last night at Aultman while Sue gets her room ready. So grateful for Sue and Kevin, she is excited to be leaving the hospital. We all are!
It was time for her to sleep, so we sang the Jammie Time Song that Mom made up when we were kids that we sang every night. Yes, mom and I still remember the song. :-)
Jammie time
Jammie time
Time to get your jammies on
Jammie time
Jammie time
Gotta get your jammies on
(Dance and repeat until your kids actually put their PJs on)

Today was not a good day. Mom had a mini stroke. :-(
Thank our lucky stars for Amy. She walked in at 9:45am and her Nurse Spidey sense went off right away when Mom mentioned a tingly arm. Amy got Sue and I in right away. Chelc was already there and on shift, thank goodness. An army of doctors and nurses paraded in all day long to give us diagnoses, advice, ask how we were, do you have any questions, anything we can do?
Mom's amazing Dr. Trehan consoled us and really made us feel at ease when we made the really tough but correct decision to stop the chemo, the transfusions, the poking and the prodding. She agreed it was doing more harm than good at this point. The chemo is too hard on her, as well as the blood transfusions.
Dr. Trehan also said, she's been glowing the past two days! She is just is so happy, I'm not sure what changed because her numbers have not gotten any better. The only difference is she's been able to spend time with us.
The medicine she needs now is love and comfort from her family and friends. Which is why our amazing aunt's, sons, daughters, and husbands are all rearranging their lives to be here ASAP.
Sue and I stopped by tonight and she was alert, laughing, talking and had eaten her entire dinner - Chicken Pot Pie, one of her favorites. We FaceTimed with Tyler and family, Amy and the kids, and Dean. Whew. We made the right decision. Now it's Family time.
Family
Their love gives me inspiration
Their love gives me limitless energy
Their love gives me gratitude
Their love gives me courage
Their love gives me purpose
Their love gives me happiness
Their love gives me answers
Their love gives me life

Well, the steak sandwich was cold by the time I got there, so that didn't work out. But I did sneak her a Wendy's Frosty during my evening visit!
Mom loved taking us and our friends for ice cream. McDonald's soft serve, Wendy's Frosties, Creme Buffet, and Twistee Treat! She enjoyed it. Brought back good memories.
I also showed her pics of my afternoon with Landen, Braxton and Carson. Such fun, we laughed, told stories about the boys and the rest of her grandkids.

Mom is still at Aultman Hospital under very good care by many doctors and nurses, with family and friends checking in. We are hoping she can go home on Tuesday or Wednesday. Still doing tests and determining the best plan forward.
Lisa arrived on Sunday night, a bit early but it was hard being so far away. Unfortunately, during Covid only one person can visit the patient during their entire hospital stay. Sue and Amy were gracious enough to put my name down. So I was able to visit her twice today. It felt so great to give her a big hug and just hold her hand while we caught up and FaceTimed Sue, Amy and the kids. She was content and had a smile on her face when I left tonight.
I visit again tomorrow for lunch and I'm sneaking her a steak sandwich, at her request. Shhhh... :-)

Mom ended up in the hospital last night because she was having trouble breathing. She’s stable now but they are keeping her for a couple of days to monitor her.
The blood transfusion on Friday lead to fluid overload so they gave her medicine to remove the fluid from her lungs. We were scared, but Amy insisted on 911 and called the hospital to give them the intel on her condition.
Chelc and Amy’s friends were working the night shift! Our little Aultman Angels checked on her all throughout the evening, which allowed us to sleep for a bit.
Amy visited and cheered her up this morning, bringing crazy hats and big smiles. Mom was so chipper today! Judi called and joked that we finally know what’s wrong, she’s a vampire and just needs blood. She laughed.
Whew. Ending the day on a good note.

Good news – Mom got a blood transfusion today and is resting. Hope she has more energy tomorrow
Bad news – Her hemoglobin dropped to 6.1, so she was eligible for the blood transfusion
Good news – The chemo is supposed to take the bad stuff out of the bone marrow
Bad news – That process means her numbers will drop for a while
Good news – They expect her hemoglobin, WBC, and RBC to increase as the treatments continue
Keep the prayers and good wishes coming!

Mom’s been pretty tired and depressed the past couple of days. Reality is setting in. Thanks to everyone who has called, if she didn’t call back yet, we are encouraging her to do so since you all cheer her up so much. She’s just down. I would be, too.
Every Monday for the next few weeks, Mom will be getting a blood test to check her numbers. Her hemoglobin and platelets are low. Unfortunately, due to a dwindling blood donation supply, her numbers are not low enough to warrant a transfusion. Which would give her more energy and raise her numbers. Bummer. (It's a reminder to the eligible people of how important it is to take the time to donate blood.)
Last night, we made a list of all the things she wants to do and people to see when Lisa can drive her around town. Trying to cheer her up! #1 on her list, hug the grandkids. #2 Hug her daughters. :-) We already know the grandkids have us beat, but that's ok. They make her smile and laugh so much, I can't wait for her to see them again.

Barb Webster (2/3/2021 07:57:49 pm) Betty has been my friend for 67 years and I could not have ever asked for a better friend. She has been in my life not only as a friend but as the sister that I never had. There is no other like her. She thinks of her family and friends before all else and will always be there when you need her. I will love her forever. There's only one Betty.
Pat Reiger (2/4/2021 03:49:06 am) I hate that Betty is going thru all of this. For such a social butterfly, Covid has limited her physical contact with family and friends. Now to have to fight this disease is tragic. She has been in and out of my life over the past 67 years losing contact during her Florida years. Betty will always be Betty, no matter what the circumstances, and will deal with everything with that beautiful smile on her face. I called her Tuesday and left a message. I will try again today.
Stephanie (2/4/2021 06:53:09 am) Thanks for the update.. sending love from Calgary
Barbara Green (2/4/2021 06:12:18 pm) Betty is certainly a very special person. She sparkles with God's love. I always loved it when she says "Hi B". She makes you feel important. My life is better because I have had Betty in my life. I love the way she talks about her children and grandchildren .They are the highlights of her life.

Mom did pretty well with her first week of chemo. Mostly tired and sore from shots.
Thank goodness for Nurse Amy securing the best doctors and the high-demand chemo treatment she needed right away. Sue drove her to treatments four days this week and made sure she had a big lunch, including treats like milkshakes, before she dropped her off. Just like Mother Goose would have done, ice cream heals all pain, right? :-) Big thanks to Ryan and Chelc for taking her for the Friday appointments. She just loved seeing you both without the window between you.
Mom got to see Amy and her kids through the window today and it was better than a shot of medicine. Amy said she looked absolutely beautiful, and happy. If there’s anything that makes Mom happy, it’s the kids in her life. We are just so sad she’s been quarantined most of the year due to Covid. She gets her second vaccination on 2/11, the day before Lisa arrives. And, then everyone can hug her (with caution)!! We can’t wait.

Sue King (2/1/2021 05:42:17 am) This has been a terrible nightmare for all of us who love her. The best thing we can do is follow in her footsteps. She has always put her family before herself. She has loved and forgiven in the worst situations. Time has always meant more to her than things. We all need to send the time we have loving and laughing. This is what she needs ❤️
Jeneen (2/2/2021 05:29:26 am) Lots of love to you guys. True that, your Mom has ALWAYS put everyone before her . She is a gentle , loving sole... everyone is family. So awesome that she has daughters like you all. Hugs and prayers, Jeneen Thank you for making this blog xoxoxox

Mom started her first round of chemo today. Five days straight, ending with a blood transfusion. Then, she has a three week break before the next one. Whew.
Her energy level is low, but her spirit is bright. She was thrilled to see her grandkids on Saturday and found out Lisa is coming from California. She sent us a text saying she'll have sweet dreams tonight. Gotta love that lady. Always putting the love of her family over her own pain and suffering.
The prayers and good wishes are being felt. Thank you, keep them coming.

Today was the day Sue, Amy, and Lisa found out our beloved Mother was diagnosed with an incurable bone marrow disorder, Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Her bone marrow is no longer making enough healthy, normal blood cells and platelets. The only treatment for her is chemo.
We're shocked, we're scared, and we're really hurting. But, we have already been to hell and back with family tragedies and we know we need to be strong and move fast. We also make a great team. Betty's family is trying to stay positive, as we want her to stay confident and happy. The last thing we need right now is another bout of depression.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out, dropped by, prayed, sent good thoughts and wishes, and for the many offers to help. We need everything we can get.

We can’t wait.

judi verzulli (2/1/2021 04:34:09 am) This is a wonderful blog! Thank you Lisa and Miranda for getting this up and working! I will be able to visit her in March, after my vaccine. I will be so happy to see her! She has such a beautiful soul, it shines so bright. And now it is her birth month!
